Akemi Ela Viswanatha was born on December 30, 2011 at 6:00pm Pacific Time. She was 6lbs 5oz and 18 inches (Chris, Colleen, and Mary were closest in their guesses!).
After she was born, the doctors were watching her transition, and were slightly concerned about her breathing as it appeared to be labored. They took Akemi to the nursery for observation and ran some tests and found that there were some small air pockets between her lungs and chest wall, which was causing the labored breathing. This is something that is not too uncommon for C-section babies (as these pockets tend to work themselves out during the course of natural labor).
They took images last night, and again this morning and these air pockets appear to have been re-absorbed and worked themselves out, which is precisely what we were all hoping for, so little Akemi is doing very well this morning.
They will likely keep her under observation for another day in the nursery just as a precaution. I checked in on Akemi periodically throughout the night and she seems to be a feisty one as she was constantly pulling and tugging off her monitors and tubes.
Crystal and I went to visit her this morning and she was pretty active and opened her eyes to say hello.
Crystal is doing well recovering and we are having some mellow time to ourselves between Akemi visits at the nursery.
Keira is with Aunt Jamie, being entertained by Carlitos, Maya, and Luna, but is anxiously wondering when she'll get to meet her new sister (which hopefully will happen tomorrow).
Thanks for all the warm wishes, love, and support from all our friends and family near and far. We can't wait for everyone to meet our newest little addition to our family.
All the love,
Naveen + Crystal
