Akemi Ela Viswanatha

Akemi Ela Viswanatha was born on December 30, 2011 at 6:00pm Pacific Time.  She was 6lbs 5oz and 18 inches (Chris, Colleen, and Mary were closest in their guesses!).

After she was born, the doctors were watching her transition, and were slightly concerned about her breathing as it appeared to be labored.  They took Akemi to the nursery for observation and ran some tests and found that there were some small air pockets between her lungs and chest wall, which was causing the labored breathing.  This is something that is not too uncommon for C-section babies (as these pockets tend to work themselves out during the course of natural labor).

They took images last night, and again this morning and these air pockets appear to have been re-absorbed and worked themselves out, which is precisely what we were all hoping for, so little Akemi is doing very well this morning.

They will likely keep her under observation for another day in the nursery just as a precaution.  I checked in on Akemi periodically throughout the night and she seems to be a feisty one as she was constantly pulling and tugging off her monitors and tubes.

Crystal and I went to visit her this morning and she was pretty active and opened her eyes to say hello.

Crystal is doing well recovering and we are having some mellow time to ourselves between Akemi visits at the nursery.

Keira is with Aunt Jamie, being entertained by Carlitos, Maya, and Luna, but is anxiously wondering when she'll get to meet her new sister (which hopefully will happen tomorrow).

Thanks for all the warm wishes, love, and support from all our friends and family near and far.  We can't wait for everyone to meet our newest little addition to our family.

All the love,
Naveen + Crystal

Awaiting Akemi's Arrival

When we went to my doctor appointment we didn't anticipate that they were going to send us over to the hospital. Luckily, we packed our bags just in case.

Here's a picture of Keira, Brown Bear and Mom waiting for the elevator to go to Labor and Delivery.

Keira was more than happy to show Mom how the hospital bed worked.

 Yay! The babysitting crew arrived.

Here's a picture of Maya trying to teach K how to play Angry Birds

 Dad's ready!

 Mom's ready too!

 Getting excited...

She's almost here, last picture before Akemi arrives :)

Clinic Visit... and Baby V2!

There is never a dull moment in our family. We started the day at LPCH for Keira's next check-in with Dr. Effinger. Good news, the increased steroid dose seems to be working. We were all able to see an improvement in her fine and gross motor skills so we are going to hold steady at this dosage for the next month and then reassess our strategy to start weaning steroids again. Then on to my doctor appointment for the baby. Apparently, this little one has a mind of her own and has made the decision that she wants to make her entrance before the new year. I've been having contractions for the last few days and after my appointment the doctor said to head over to Labor & Delivery. It's been a mellow afternoon. Keira was more than happy to go home with Jamie and Maya. She told us she will be back to meet her sister soon. :)

Playdate with Soraya

With Little Stompers being closed for the holidays, Keira was missing her friends. Every morning she would ask me if she would get to see Soraya so Glory and I arranged a day out with the girls.

We met at the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo. The girls had a great time running around and checking out the animals.

The duck pond was a big hit!

How cute are these two?!

After a fun morning we went out for pizza

and then for dessert - cupcakes!

Keira's 1st Xmas Performance

Thought we would also post the pictures from the performance. Naveen got some cute shots of the kiddos, but you have to watch the video if you want the true experience. :)

Keira's 1st Xmas Performance

Keira had been practicing her Xmas songs all week long and was very, very excited to put on her first Xmas performance. Of course, we weren't quite sure how she would react when she saw all the parents there staring at her...but she did a fantastic job. Although we're not quite sure how she ended up losing one sock in the 5 minutes between us dropping her her off and when she came out for her performance. Needless to say, we're both pretty proud of our little star! Enjoy the video (it's about 12 mins long).

Ocean Beach

What better way to spend Christmas Eve than at the beach?!

Keira has been asking to go to the beach for weeks now and since the weather was cooperating we thought we would load up the car and head over to Ocean Beach. There was no fog and the sun was out, what a treat! Keira immediately took off her shoes and socks and made way for the water.

She had a great time running around, looking for rocks and petting dogs. She was a bit too brave and ended up getting knocked over by an incoming wave. Obviously she takes after her dad, because if I got that wet I would be heading home to a hot shower. Instead she peeled off her wet clothes, put on her fleece jacket and sat on the sand in her diaper for another 40 minutes making sandcastles.

That's our Keira. :)

Cookies!

What's Christmas without cookies?! Keira helped Mary mix up the cookie dough. She was super excited that she cracked the eggs "all by herself!" Then the real fun began as we tried to help a very independent 2 1/2 year old roll out and cut cookie dough.

I'd say she did a pretty good job and she was all smiles when it was time for the taste test. :)

Clinic Visit + Medication Adjustment

We went back to LPCH today to check in with Dr. Effinger/Dr. Twist about some of the more concerning things we have been seeing with Keira. I have to say that I may be biased since I'm her mom, but I think that Keira is just amazing. Through all of these ups and downs she just keeps living life and finds ways to do the things she wants to do.

Unfortunately, there have just been too many coincidences for her symptoms not to be an OMS flare up.

On Wednesday morning I noticed that Keira was using her left hand to help stabilize getting the spoon to her mouth. After talking at length with Dr. Effinger we decided to try to get her in to see OT before Friday but at this point we knew that a medication adjustment was needed. Keira and I were able to get in to see Eiri and although Keira is able to do all things age appropriate (sting beads, cut on a line, lace cards, color with a crayon, etc) Eiri did notice a shakiness in her hand and definite tremors when she was trying to stack blocks. In the past Keira has been able to build a tower with 10 blocks and was only able to stack 6 before they would tumble.

In addition, this week Naveen and I have both observed Keira pressing on her eyes. She has told us separately during our bedtime routine that her eyes feel "tired" and that she is ready for bed now and will forgo rocking or songs. There have been no noticeable signs of opsoclonus but she never did present with traditional opsoclonus symptoms even when she was at her worst. We do know that her eyes have bothered her in the past and she tries to express it to us in her own way. We really try not to put ideas or labels for things on her but rather listen to what she says and observe her behavior.

As we left the house for our appointment on Friday morning I asked Keira to let me go down the stairs first. She has been quite stable on stairs for a while but after all these little things popping up this week I just felt like I should be in front of her. Thank goodness I did that because as we made our way down the stairs she tripped and fell forward sliding down a few stairs into me. Poor Keira didn't understand what happened to her body since this has never happened before. It's heartbreaking to see your little girl start struggling with things she knows she can do. :(

Dr. Effinger and Dr. Twist had already talked at length before our appointment and we've decided to take a few steps back with her steroid dose. We know that she was stable this summer when she was taking 2ml/twice daily, every other day, so this seems like the most appropriate place to go back to. We are hopeful that this will be what Keira's body needs to get back to her baseline, but keep in mind she has not had IVIg for almost 12 weeks. For the past year the longest we have gone between IVIg treatments has been 8 weeks. While we know the medication only stays in the body for 3-4 weeks the combination of IVIg and steroids might have been what K's body was doing so well on. Putting IVIg aside for now, we are going to see how K does with an increased dose of steroids and re-evaluate in another 2 weeks. Obviously, if she gets any worse we will make another medication adjustment sooner.

While we know that OMS is a lifelong condition that will undoubtedly have its ups and downs it is hard to comprehend how this is happening when Keira has been doing so well for the last few months. She is healthy and has been handling the steroid weaning relatively well. It just appears that her body wasn't quite ready for the next step.

Although this is a time of uncertainty for our family, we have faith in the knowledge of Keira's doctors and in our daughter's determination to overcome OMS. We are blessed to be surrounded by the love of our family and friends which help us to remain positive and strong. Only happy thoughts for the rest of 2011.

Fun with Packing Peanuts!

What's more fun on a Sunday afternoon than playing with a big box of packing peanuts?!

Keira amused herself for quite some time swimming in the peanuts,

throwing them up in the air like snow,

and then trying to figure out the best way to clean up her mess.

Unfortunately, the broom didn't work as well as she had hoped and she had to ask for some assistance from her mom and dad :)

Who could resist that smile?!

Fantasy Flight to North Pole

Keira was invited to participate in United's Fantasy Flight to the North Pole through LPCH. She was super excited about the thought of going on the airplane to see Santa.

United did an amazing job making the kiddos feel special. When we got to SFO Keira got a large penguin, Santa hat with her name on it and a boarding pass to the North Pole. We went through security and headed to our gate. It was a bit overwhelming, even for Keira.

There were a ton of people and local mascots greeting the kids. Keira's favorites were Stomper,
the A's elephant, and the Oden, the tiger from Six Flags.

After hanging out a bit, Keira and Naveen boarded the plane for take-off.

The flight path included going down to Santa Cruz and then back up to San Francisco, right over the Golden Gate Bridge. Keira was stoked to see the Palace of Fine Arts which she thinks looks like a big ice cream cone. :) The plot twist was when Santa's sleigh got hit by a blizzard and had to land on the plane. The plane decide to head back to SFO and let the party continue there instead. Ironically, Keira was more interested in Bearemy, the big bear who was giving high fives on the plane, and not Santa.

The highlight for dad was meeting the captain and getting to try on his cool hat.

When the plane landed, they had the terminal set up to look like the North Pole.

Keira had fun playing in the "snow" and then we got to meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus before heading home.

I think our little girl had a bit of jet lag after such a fun-filled day.

Tree Trimming

Our new favorite Christmas tradition, thanks to Uncle Pat!

Last spring, Uncle Pat spent hours cutting out all the tiny pieces for this advent calendar (he made a total of 12 trees and 300 ornaments). Over the summer, Aunt Mary, my mom and I painted all the pieces and now we get to enjoy the countdown with our families.  Keira was so excited to be able to put an ornament on the tree each night before bed.

Now on to decorating Rush!  After helping me decorate the tree she took down her favorite ornaments to play with. She even made a little bed for the kitten ornament.  It was sweet to see her so interested in where the ornaments came from and which ones belonged to her. :)

Thought I would end with a cute butt shot!
